Regular screening for colon, prostate and breast cancer has become the norm for many people in the United States. However, skin cancernationwide, skin cancer screenings are still not as common as they should be, according to a study done by the National Institute of Health. At Bayside Laser and Skin Care Associates in Annapolis, MD, Dr. Gerald Newman wants all of his patients to schedule yearly skin cancer screenings, especially since he makes it an easier and more accurate experience with dermoscopy. Learn more about this unique approach to skin cancer detection here.

What is dermoscopy?

Sometimes called dermatoscopy, dermoscopy is the process in which your dermatologist uses a special tool, called a dermatoscope, to closely inspect lesions on the skin. A dermatoscope looks similar to an otoscope used to examine the ears at a physician's office; it consists of magnifying glass and a light, allowing Dr. Newman to carefully review the well-defined properties of suspicious lesions that might not be immediately seen during a standard skin check.

What are the advantages of dermoscopy?

Early detection of skin cancer, in particular melanoma, is associated with a higher cure rate and a lower likelihood of invasive complications. Scheduling yearly dermoscopy screenings from your Annapolis dermatologist is therefore the best and most accurate way of detecting minor problems before they become major. Because a dermatoscope allows Dr. Newman to carefully examine the properties of each lesion, benign lesions are less likely to be removed unnecessarily, cutting back on cost, lab analysis and healing time.

Are there other uses for dermoscopy?

A dermatoscope is an extremely useful tool for your dermatologist. It can be used to diagnose hair and skin disorders like alopecia, fungal infections or lice. Close examination means that diagnoses can be made quickly instead of waiting for lab results to return.
